Be the best of whatever you are

Grazie al commento al mio post sui nomi delle stelle ho trovato questa citazione, attribuita a Martin Luther King:

Se sei destinato ad essere uno spazzino, pulisci le strade come Michelangelo dipingeva i suoi quadri, come Beethoven componeva musica, come Leontyne Prince cantava davanti al Metropolitan, come Shakespeare scriveva poesia. Pulisci le strade così bene in modo che tutti gli abitanti del paradiso e della terra si fermino e dicano: “Qui visse un grande spazzino, uno che fece bene il suo lavoro.” Se non puoi essere pino in cima alla collina, sii un arbusto nella valle. Sii, sii il miglior piccolo arbusto sul fianco della collina.
Sii un cespuglio se non puoi essere un albero. Se non puoi essere una strada maestra, sii semplicemente un sentiero. Se non puoi essere il sole, sii una stella. Perché non è per le dimensioni che si vince o si perde. Sii il meglio di qualsiasi cosa tu sia.

Ho cercato un po', e ho scoperto che in effetti queste parole le ha pronunciate Martin Luther King, che però era ispirato da una poesia di Douglas Malloch, questa:

If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub in the valley — but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.

If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass —
